Therapies we are using

Anat Baniel Method

This is a respectful, gentle and attentive, child led approach to neuromovement that recognises all the subtle, random movements and experiences most children have which allow them to become aware of their bodies and develop.

A key principle is that "if they could they would." Instead of forcing children to do something they can't or making them feel inferior for their uniqueness, this method teaches us to be really present and attentive to what they can do and allow them to become aware of that also.

I strongly recommend the book "Kids without limits" by Anat Baniel to everyone, parent or not.

RMTi

Babies repeat movements in a rhythm that create networks within their brains and build new skills on top of one another. For some children, such as Abdullah, these rhythms can be supported passively in order to stimulate the same pathways in the brain. It works at their pace in their capacity.

"Rhythmic Movement Training is a movement based, primitive (infant or neo-natal) reflex integration program that uses developmental movements, gentle isometric pressure and self-awareness to rebuild the foundations necessary to help overcome learning, sensory, emotional and behavioural challenges for children and adults."

It integrates reflexes, builds neural pathways, creates postural foundations and stimulates the senses.

The approach is gentle, attentive and gradual and we have noticed obvious differences for Abdullah, such as loosening up his fists and then engaging in more voluntary movements with his hands and arms. The exercises are easy to fit into our daily life and gentle enough to not cause him discomfort.

Physiotherapy

Abdullah loves physical touch, stretches and massage unless he is very upset or dystonic. He has daily physio through play at home to stretch and manipulate all his limbs and joints. He also uses a stander and a sleep system which helps to stop him crossing his feet over.

Play and sensory therapy

As for every child, Abdullah learns a great deal through play. We have a wonderful play worker who sees him regularly and we try to use different objects, sounds, textures and games with him.

Nature therapy

I am a strong believer in the power of nature to heal and allow us to connect to ourselves and the world around it. It is important to us that Abdullah has plenty of time outdoors to benefit from the smells, sounds and sights of nature. Please see here my post from Eco Ed Forest School on forest healing for all children.
